Follow the Little Black Rooster

The district of Chianti is found in Central-West Italy in the Region of Tuscany.  The most northerly part of Chianti lies south of Firenze, midway between Milan and Rome.  Wine has been produced here for Centuries, along with olive oil, and exports to England increased dramatically in the 17th Century.

The wines from Chianti have had a chequered history over the years and styles have varied considerably, as has the quality.  As a result a number of the more prestigious producers formed a ‘consorzio’ of producers (wine consortium) in 1924 with the goal to install discipline in the creation of the wine and to protect its reputation and name.  It was this ‘consorzio’ that established the Chianti Classico zone.

Chianti Classico refers specifically to the central part of the district, in and around the hills of Chianti. Today some 7,000 hectares of vineyards makeup the Chianti Classico Denominazione.  In 1984 new rules were introduced with the intention of improving the overall quality of wine in the area.  These rules dictate strict guidance on yields, minimum aging periods, as well as minimum age limits on vines to be harvested.  These new rules propelled the Classico area into DOCG status.

The appellation of Chianti Classico, since 1995, permits up to 100% Sangiovese, although it must contain a minimum of 75% of this grape.  Other grapes permitted in the blended styles are 5% to 10% Canaiolo nero, up to 10% Cabernet, Merlot, or Syrah, and prior to 2006 the wines could contain 5% to 10% of the white Trebbiano or Malvasia grapes.  However, the 2006 changes mean that white grapes are no longer permitted.

Today the Chianti Classico Emblem, the unmistakable Black Rooster, is our assurance of quality, for this exclusive Trademark may only be used by wine originating from the designated area that adheres to the high standards required.  Production is carefully controlled from the vine to the bottle.
The quality of Chianti Classico is satisfyingly reliable, whilst allowing sufficient freedom for winemakers to leave their own mark of individuality on the wine, thus ensuring each creation from this fascinating appellation is unique in its own way.
