Pichon Lalande 1988

TASTING NOTES

Mature aromas, meaty, inky, slightly vegetal. A seductive medium bodied claret, more vegetal-meaty fruit. Well integrated tannins,  and  a very fine balance with it. A sumptuous wine.

BACKGROUND

The Duphot designed chateau of Pichon Lalande affords a fine view across the vines to its illustrious neighbour,Chateau Latour and to the Gironde beyond. The chateau was classed as a deuxième cru in the 1855 classification.
The major part of the vineyard is situated to the west and south of Pichon-Baron, on typical Gunzian gravels over a deeper clay and some very deep limestone and sandstone. The vines are 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, an impressive 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The fruit is harvested by hand before being destemmed and crushed, and then fermented in a selection of 33 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with a cuvaison usually lasting between 18 and 24 days during which the cap is submerged by pumping over.
For the last few decades the wines have been some of the most consistent in Bordeaux; the 1991 Pichon Lalande is a prime example of an excellent wine amongst what is generally considered to be an inferior vintage. Many hold the wines of this particular Pichon property in very high regard; it has long held a valid claim for the title of 'Super Second', alongside the likes of Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou. Very recent vintages, such as the 2003 and 2004, show that this level of premium quality has been maintained, producing elegant and refined clarets of the highest caliber.
