TASTING NOTES
Nice intense red: On the nose, cassis, later mix of fruits and greens; powerful on the palate, pleasurable acids and fruits, good pleasurable finish.
BACKGROUND
The beautiful chateau here was built in 1851, and a few years later, the chateau was classed as a deuxième cru in the 1855 classification.
The vineyards at Pichon-Baron cover 73 hectares of typical gravel, and are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Harvesting is manual, and the fruit destemmed before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 28°C to 30°C. Malolactic occurs in vat, after which the wine is transferred into French oak barrels (some may undergo malolactic here) for up to 18 months, using 70% new and 30% one-year old, with racking every 3 months.
For the last few decades the wines have been some of the most consistent in Bordeaux; Many hold the wines of this particular Pichon property in very high regard; it has long held a valid claim for the title of 'Super Second', alongside the likes of Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou. Very recent vintages, such as the 2003 and 2004, show that this level of premium quality has been maintained, producing elegant and refined clarets of the highest caliber.
FOOD MATCHING
Red meats, strong aged cheeses or enjoyed on its own.
CELLAR POTENTIAL
Has aged well, and showed well in 2010 tastings. Should be drunk over the next 2-5 years.
