BACKGROUND
Little known distillery.
Balmenach Distillery traces its origins back to 1824, making it one of the older distilleries in Speyside. Next to Glenlivet, Balmenach was the first licensed Distillery and in an area of frenetic illegal production. The hills which sit behind the distillery which provide the spring water for whisky making offered plenty of nooks and crannies for opportunists to hide an illicit still. Distilling was maintained by the McGregor family until 1930 when Scotch Malt Distillers bought the distillery, as they did so many distilleries at that time. Unfortunately for Balmenach, while under the umbrella of United Distillers & Vintners (previously Scottish Malt Distillers and now Diageo), this malt whisky was not promoted particularly heavily as a brand. Its spirit is recognised as a high quality malt for blending so it has always been in demand, however. Neglected as a single malt in its own right, the distillery was closed in 1993 but bought by Inver House in 1998. Peat is not being used in the malting process and while sherry casks are being used for maturation, future bottlings are not likely to be as heavily sherried .
