TASTING NOTES
A blend of 50% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Pinotage. Elegant spiced red berry fruits, somewhat reminiscent of Christmas fruit cake, are interlaid with nuances of oak aromatics.
BACKGROUND
In South Africa, Danie Steytler is considered one of the top two producers of Pinotage in the country. He wins numerous awards and accolades for his Pinotage and the Vision (a Cape blend with 40% Pinotage) and is passionate about the variety which in Danie’s words ‘put Kaapzicht on the map’. Kaapzicht is situated up in the Bottelary Hills with magnificent views towards Table Mountain. The farm was first mentioned in 1712 and was purchased by the Steytler family in 1946. The 174 hectare estate has 135ha of vineyards planted on mainly north-facing slopes. An ambitious planting programme is seeing the replacement of the Chenin vineyards with top quality red varieties while the old gnarled Pinotage bush vines are given tender care and attention. The ever modest, dedicated family team consists of Danie making the wine, his brother George the viticulturist and Danie’s wife, Yngvild, responsible for sales and marketing. The Steytlers celebrated their 60th anniversary as a family farm in 2006. Success could not have come to nicer or more hard working people.
