The Legendary Eric Fabre Visits Essentially Wine

3rd March 2010:

It was just another normal day at Essentiall Wine Chipstead. In the morning I sold some wine, spoke to some suppliers, chatted to Stephen and grabbed a  sandwich.  In the afternoon I opened the door to the world renowned ex- technical Director of Lafite Rothschild and, since 2002, owner of an outstanding vineyard in the Languedoc.

Considering he had spent most of the day in a car being driven from pillar to post, Eric Fabre of Chateau d’Angles looked remarkably elegant and lively as he walked through the door, clutching a bag full of wines from the Chateau.  His wines are as elegant and lively as their creator, and Eric was proud to present his newly re-branded wines to Essentiall Wine, the sole retailer of Chateau d’Angles in the southern counties.

The wines we were privileged to taste were:

Ch. D’Angles Classique 2007 Rouge - a blend of Syrah 40%, Grenache 40% & Mourvedre 20%
Ch. D’Angles Grand Vin 2007 Rouge - a blend of Syrah 40%, Mourvedre 40%, Grenache 15% & Carignan 5%
Ch.D’Angles Classique 2008 Blanc – a blend of Bourboulenc  50%, Grenache 40%, Roussanne 5% & Marsanne 5%
Ch. D’Angles Classique Rose 2009 - a blend of Mourvedre 80%, Syrah 10% & Grenache 10%

The nose on all four wines was very pronounced.  The wines are all skilfully & carefully blended to give of their best.  On the nose and palate, everything shouts finesse, elegance, silkiness and balance.  The tannins are soft and the fruit is ripe.  There is ageing potential across the whole range.

I am not going to give any formal tasting notes, but my advice is try these wines as soon as you can. Check out our website for full details.

Sadly Eric had to rush off to London to meet the media and the wine critics, but his insight into the grape selection, the blending to achieve just the right style of wine and  the general progress of the Chateau since 2002 was gratefully received here.  It gives us so much pleasure to meet the growers.  Eric’s visit just made me want to rush home for my passport and head south to taste these stunning wines again down in that beautiful family Chateau on the massif de la Clape.
